How to get ICMA(NZ) Designations?
The professional (master’s level) designation, the CMA(NZ), is only available to individuals who complete the CMA(NZ) preparatory program.
CMA(NZ) preparatory program is conducted by Accredited Universities; or Recognised Provider Institution (RPIs) of ICMA(NZ); or Online.
To undertake the CMA(NZ) preparatory program individuals must have a degree in accounting, commerce or finance, or an MBA* from a recognised university or a recognised Professional Qualification in Accounting.
The requirements of all other membership categories are provided below.
There are five designations within the Institute:
- Certified Management Accountant of New Zealand – entitled to use the designatory letters CMA(NZ)
Bachelor’s Degree (NZQF Level 7) in Accounting, Commerce or Finance or equivalent, or a Master of Business Administration Degree (NZQF Level 9) or equivalent, or Professional Qualification in Accounting, completion of Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Stage of the CMA New Zealand Professional Education Programme; and 5 years relevant experience. - Graduate Management Accountant of New Zealand – entitled to use the designatory letters GMA(NZ)
Bachelor’s Degree (NZQF Level 7) in Accounting, Commerce or Finance or equivalent, or a Master of Business Administration Degree (NZQF Level 9) or equivalent, or Professional Qualification in Accounting or completion of Graduate Management Accountant (GMA) Stage of the CMA New Zealand Professional Education Programme. There are no experience requirements. - Registered Business Accountant of New Zealand entitled to use the designatory letters RBA(NZ)
Bachelor’s Degree (NZQF Level 7) in any discipline other than Accounting or equivalent, or a Diploma (NZQF Level 7) in Accounting or equivalent, or completion of Registered Business Accountant (RBA) Stage of the CMA New Zealand Professional Education Programme. - Registered Cost Accountant of New Zealand – entitled to use the designatory letters RCA(NZ)
Diploma (NZQF Level 5) in Accounting or equivalent, or completion of Registered Cost Accountant (RCA) Stage of the CMA New Zealand Professional Education Programme. - Certified Accounting Technician of New Zealand – entitled to use the designatory letters CAT(NZ)
Certificate (NZQF Level 4) in Accounting or equivalent, or completion of Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Stage of the CMA New Zealand Professional Education Programme.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements
Only natural persons who satisfy the Institute’s relevant educational requirements (or equivalent) and possess the relevant practical experience are eligible to obtain ICMA(NZ) designations.
